Thembalethu Development was appointed by the Mining Qualification Authority (MQA) to implement the
Unemployed Youth Development Programme in the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality of the Sekhukhune
District, Limpopo Province. This initiative was designed to address the critical issue of youth unemployment
in one of Limpopo's districts with the highest unemployment rates. Thembalethu Development's task was to
provide accredited training to 80 unemployed youth, enhancing their skills and competencies to improve
employability, start small farming enterprises, and pursue careers in agriculture.

The programme specifically targeted the development of practical agricultural skills, crucial for the
district's economic growth. Of the 80 learners, 34 had previously completed parts of the skills programme
and were now enrolled to finish the remaining units, leading to a full NQF level 3 qualification in Plant
Production. This continuity ensured that the learners could build on their existing knowledge and move
closer to becoming qualified professionals in the agricultural sector.

For the 46 new learners, the programme offered an NQF Level 3 Skills programme in Plant Production. This
foundational training was designed to equip them with the necessary agricultural skills and knowledge to
either enter the workforce or start their own farming ventures. The focus on plant production is
particularly relevant to the region, given its agricultural potential and the need for skilled workers in
                        this sector.

The programme's structure aimed to provide comprehensive training that combined theoretical knowledge with
practical application. By doing so, it not only enhanced the employability of the participants but also
empowered them to contribute to the local economy. The initiative also sought to inspire entrepreneurial
spirit among the youth, encouraging them to explore opportunities in agriculture and potentially create job
opportunities for others within their communities.

Overall, Thembalethu Development's implementation of the Unemployed Youth Development Programme in
partnership with the MQA is a vital step towards addressing youth unemployment in the Sekhukhune District.
By focusing on accredited training and practical skills development, the programme is helping to create a
more skilled and capable workforce, fostering economic growth and stability in one of Limpopo's most
underserved areas. The initiative not only benefits the individual participants but also has the potential
to create a ripple effect, positively impacting the wider community.
